The research group “Jazz, improvised & popular music” has been created in October 2021, with the goal to support, encourage, and promote artistic research at KCB’s jazz department on all levels (from BA to PhD) and in all contingents (staff and students). The research group is open to all forms of jazz, (non-classical) improvised music, and popular music with a focus on contemporary perspectives in a performance-based context.

On this research day, we proudly present a range of ongoing artistic research in jazz, featuring some of our PhD jazz researchers and brand-new Doctor in Jazz: Bo van der Werf as special guest!

Programme

10h-12h: Les Petits Pays Colorés: colours of Messiaen in jazz.
Presentation by Bo van der Werf (LUCA School of Arts – Leuven/KULeuven).

(12h-14h: closed meeting: members of the research group only)

14h-15h: Using progressive metal to develop drum phrases in contemporary jazz improvisation.
