Romantic Idyllic

It is with sadness that we announce that this concert has been cancelled.

Idyllic atmospheres, sweet-sounding romantic melodies, fairylike sounds from Bohemia, these are the ingredients of this wonderful string programme. Franz Schreker's "Intermezzo" is a gem.

Schreker once was the most celebrated composer in Germany, but the rise of Nazism first brought his music into disrepute, only to be (unjustly) forgotten. Lovely, playful, light-hearted… These are adjectives that do not immediately connect you to the work of Leos Janacek, but that well characterise this youthful work for strings. This Idylle is certainly indebted to the main piece on the programme: Antonin Dvorak's Serenade for strings. Together with Tchaikovsky's Serenade, this is the highlight of romantic string literature and a "must" for every string student to have ever played this in their training.
