During this research day, the dialogue between composition, music theory, and musicology takes centre stage. We are pleased to welcome composer Gabriele Manca and Carl van Eyndhoven for lectures and a composition masterclass for our composition students.

Lecturers

Gabriele Manca studied piano with Bruno Canino and composition with Giacomo Manzoni at the Milan Conservatory, where he graduated with highest honours. He received, among other distinctions, the Musica nel nostro tempo–Casa Ricordi Prize (1979) and the Neue Generation in Europa Prize (1985). He collaborated with figures such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel (serving as Kagel’s assistant) and was affiliated with Teatro alla Scala and RAI. His oeuvre, ranging from solo works to orchestral and electronic music, is performed worldwide at leading festivals. Manca teaches composition at the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” in Milan.

Carl Van Eyndhoven graduated in organ and music pedagogy at the Lemmensinstituut (Leuven) and carillon at the Netherlands Carillon School. He has a PhD in seventeenth-century carillon performance practice from Leuven University and was, for many years,  Head of Research (Music & Drama) and Dean at the Faculty of the Arts (LUCA School of Arts – Leuven University). He is president of the Béla Bartók Archives of Belgium, and CEMPER (Expertise Center for the Heritage of Music and Performing Arts). From 2000 to 2012 he was the chairman of the Flemish Carillon Society. He is the carillonneur of the cities of Tilburg (the Netherlands) and Mol (Belgium). He is renowned for his jazz improvisations on carillon and played concerts in Japan, Denmark, U.S.A., Ireland, Poland, Germany etc. In 2017 he recorded the CD ‘Django Bells’ together with the jazz manouche ensemble Minor Sing from Lyon.
