The International Network for Artistic Research in Jazz (INARJ), founded in 2019, will hold its fifth conference at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. INARJ was established to support this growing discipline and does so, among other ways, through publications such as ARJAZZ as well as its annual conferences. The aim of these conferences is to broaden and strengthen the network by providing a platform for the promotion of artistic research in jazz, improvised, and popular music.

The specific focus of this fifth edition is to reflect on and experiment with questions related to place and space: What is the place of artistic research within the jazz community? What space does the relationship between the researcher and their practice occupy? What place should artistic experimentation be given within an academic discipline? During the conference, artistic jazz researchers from Belgium and abroad will present their work in word and sound, engage in dialogue, network, and make music together.

This conference is organised by the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (Erasmushogeschool Brussel) in collaboration with JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music (Vienna), the University of Music and Performing Arts (Graz), the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (Cardiff), and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
