Heinrich Schütz’s wrote his Weinachtshistorie when he was 75 years old. It was probably performed for the first time during the Christmas of 1660, at the court chapel in Dresden. By which time, Schütz carried with him a wealth of experiences, musical and personal, good and bad, the breadth of which has been expertly woven into this work. His colourful scoring and dramatic setting of the oratorio show clear influences from his Venetian teachers Claudio Monteverdi and Giovanni Gabrieli, who also feature in the programme of tonight.
