Sharp rise in tuition fees threatens access to higher music education

Recent austerity measures have led to a significant increase in tuition fees for non-EEA students. This puts access to higher music education under pressure and threatens the international character of the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. During the Queen Elisabeth contest, students will play their requiem while mourning the future of young talent.

To support these students, a fundraising campaign is being launched. The Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel stands for high-quality, international and accessible artistic music education.

The Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (KCB) is an artistic hub that attracts talent from all over the world. Building on its rich tradition, KCB trains musicians and performers to become outstanding artists and artist-teachers. For students from outside the EU, the impact is significant. Starting next academic year, their tuition fees will rise to €17,500 per year. Funding for non-EU students will be limited to 2% of the student population, while at KCB this figure is closer to 10%. As a result, costs at KCB will increase more sharply than at other institutions. For many international applicants, studying here will therefore become unattainable. There is a real risk that talented students from outside Europe will no longer choose our leading arts programmes. The impact extends beyond our institution as well: orchestras and performing companies also rely on us for the development of young talent.

Because KCB fears that talented students may no longer be able to afford their education, the institution is launching a solidarity fund in collaboration with the KCB Friends Association. Through this initiative, KCB warmly calls on Belgian art lovers to provide financial support to students during these challenging times.

Donate here and support international talent.
