BERNARDO SILVA (MC 14 & 15/05)

Bernardo Silva was born in Porto, Portugal, and is one of the country’s leading horn players.

He studied in Lisbon and Hamburg with Jonathan Luxton and Ab Koster, and took part in masterclasses with renowned hornists including Radovan Vlatković and Hermann Baumann.

Bernardo is principal horn of the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música. He performs regularly as a soloist, in recitals, chamber music and orchestral settings, with appearances across Europe, North and South America, Russia and Asia.

He teaches at the University of Aveiro and at ESMAE – Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo in Porto, and frequently gives masterclasses in Portugal and abroad.

Bernardo often serves on the jury of national and international competitions, including in Portugal, Spain, Finland, Canada and the USA. He was awarded First Prize at the IHS Farkas Competition in Finland in 2002.

An active recording artist, his discography includes solo, chamber and orchestral works. He regularly performs chamber music, both in duo with piano and in horn quartet. He is a founding member of Trompas Lusas, which performs widely in Portugal and internationally.

Bernardo is Vice-President of the International Horn Society and is an artist for DürkHorns and Romera Brass.

KRISTINA MASCHER-TURNER (MC 14/05)

Kristina Mascher-Turner is an internationally acclaimed horn player, chamber musician and educator. A former principal horn of the Brussels Philharmonic and member of ensembles such as the American Horn Quartet, Luxembrass and Summit Brass, she is known for her expressive sound and compelling musical storytelling. Kristina has performed with leading orchestras throughout Europe and beyond, including the Luxembourg Philharmonic, La Monnaie/De Munt and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. 

She has appeared as a soloist and clinician at major festivals and horn symposia worldwide, and currently serves on the artist faculty of the Rafael Méndez Brass Institute.

Ms Mascher-Turner holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin (USA) and the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. She also studied privately with Fergus McWilliam of the Berlin Philharmonic.

A dedicated pedagogue, Kristina has given masterclasses and led residencies in over 30 countries.
 

She served as Vice President of the International Horn Society from 2015 to 2021. In 2022, she received the IHS Punto Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the art of horn playing. Also active as a vocal ensemble singer and certified Reiki master, Kristina brings warmth, curiosity and poetic insight to every aspect of her musical life. She performs on a Ricco Kühn W393X triple horn.
