Ronan Kernoa, of Franco-Dutch origin, was introduced to early music at a young age through his father. After winning first prizes in cello and chamber music in Rouen, he specialized in historical string instruments, studying with Philippe Foulon and Alain Gervreau, and obtained both a Bachelor (2007) and a Master (2009) in historical cello with distinction at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
Fascinated by the viola da gamba, he continued his studies with Wieland Kuijken and Philippe Pierlot at the same conservatory, earning another Bachelor (2015) and Master (2018), both with highest distinction. In 2019 he was awarded the prestigious Ingeborg Köberle Prize for his work on the viola da gamba.
Alongside performing, he also composes: his stage music for Peer Gynt was awarded in Hungary, and he regularly writes for period instruments, notably for Les Abbagliati, the ensemble he co-founded. Improvisation also plays a significant role in his artistic practice.
