Introduction

Alice Lidell. That is the name of the real Alice, the girl for whom Lewis Carroll created his famous Wonderland. Populated by silly figures from their shared surroundings, the Oxford of 1865: cold-blooded reptile butlers, a baroness on a bicycle, a grinning Cheschire Cat.

The original inhabitants of the book still live, down on their luck. With bitter pride, they watch as Alice continues to enjoy enormous success, success that still enriches major production houses, version after version, while they still not see a penny. Yet, they are the inspiration, the original ideas, the true inhabitants of the book. Desperate and with fists clenched in revolution, they invite the now ancient Alice to...a Tea Party.

Tea Party is a research musical by composer Peter Spaepen. He provides texts, music and direction to bring his central question to a live audience: can an artistically driven work of art flourish in a commercially driven world?
