Within the festive closing event of the Belgian Music Days, the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides presents a sampling of Belgian music.
During the first part of the programme, we will hear a work by Jacqueline Fonteyn, followed by the rarely played Réquisitoire (1973) for brass and percussion, opus 28 by 85-year-old Frederik Van Rossum. André Waignein (1942-2015) composed his Rhapsody commissioned by the International Adolphe Sax Competition in Dinant in 2010. Soloist during the concert is Vadim Tkachuk from the saxophone class of Simon Diricq, first laureate of the competition in 2010.
The second part of the programme features two contrasting 20th-century works by Jean Absil (1893-1974) and his pupil Victor Legley (1897-1984). With Rites (1952), Absil follows in the footsteps of his two great examples: his Brussels teacher Paul Gilson and Florent Schmitt. Counterpart to this suite in the programme is Victor Legley's Seventh Symphony (1988), composed especially for the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides and dedicated to Norbert Nozy.
